GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — A man died while attempting to jump over a highway on Tuesday, according to the Grand County Sheriff's Office.
Emergency responders received a 911 call at around 3 p.m. on Thursday after a skiing accident happened on Highway 40 near Berthoud Pass Summit.
Early investigations suggest the 21-year-old skier was trying to take off from one side of the highway and land on the other, but he lacked the necessary speed and distance and landed on the highway.
The skier was wearing a helmet and other protective gear, according to the GCSO.
Officials closed Highway 40 traffic in both directions while investigating the scene. The roadway has since been reopened.
The coroner has not yet confirmed the victim's identity and cause of death.
