GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — A new study from Standford University has some questioning gas stoves and their safety. Professional chefs often swear by using only natural gas stoves to cook, but should you have one in your home?
President of The Appliance Doctor Corey Bendetti says "(There are) situation(s) where you can turn your gas on and have it not lit and have it just pouring gas into your house."
Bendetti says explosions can happen with just a spark.
"Your furnace kicking on or off. If your kitchen is close to your water heater, the spark from your water heater can set it off."
The study finds every time you light a gas or propane stove, you're inhaling pollutants that may increase asthma rates and even early deaths.
Bendetti says electric stoves have fewer safety concerns than gas stoves.
"There's not a whole lot of safety concerns with electric, obviously, leaving the burner on and burning yourself, but it doesn't explode the way gas does."
