GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) selected Grand Junction to participate in what they call urban heat mapping. The heat mapping campaign exists to address extreme heat in the U.S.

The heat mapping exercise will take place on Saturday, July 20, with July 27 and Aug. 3 as alternatives in case the temperature isn't hot enough to conduct the exercise.

40 to 50 community volunteers will collect data by recording the heat index across areas of Grand Junction through heat sensors mounted on their car. Volunteers will be paired up in teams of two. One community member will drive, while the other will direct and record results.
