GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — Originally built in 1940, Montrose High School has been showing signs of aging.

Discussions on reconstruction of the dilapidated building are ongoing.

Public Information Officer for Montrose County School District Matt Jenkins says after 84 years of Band-Aids the school and the district are working to find a longer-term solution. He showed WesternSlopeNow one example of the signs of aging.

"(The) 800 sq feet that we're standing in collapsed. It was mainly I think around this area. You could just see where it was sagging, and the concrete was busted, and you could see rebar and then concrete chunks were falling down in this area."

There were other reasons Jenkins told WesternSlopeNow reconstruction of the campus was needed. A lift on campus experiences problems on a weekly basis. The reason it's called a lift and not an elevator is because the current lift does not fit a gurnee.

"Students get trapped in this elevator roughly once a week."

Jenkins tells WesternSlopeNow if language on the current bond measure is passed by the school board at end of this month and voters approve the measure in November, construction would begin in the summer of 2025 with a completion date expected for some time in 2027.

You can learn more about the project by going to the Montrose County School District website.
