MONTROSE COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) — The Bucktail Fire, 5 miles northeast of Nucla, continues to spread as it's at an estimated 2,046 acres as of Friday morning.
The blaze, which began Thursday morning, has continued to close more roads. Montrose County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) announced Houser Cow Camp Road extending down to Old Highway 90 is blocked off. A containment level hasn't been given.
Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison (GMUG) National Forests Fire Information reported smoke is heading downwind and affecting the San Miguel River and Gunnison River valleys
"Some areas with elevated smoke impacts will see the air clear by mid-morning. Smoke may return after the evening when winds drop, and colder air allows it to settle in the valleys," according to GMUG.
"Anyone with a high sensitivity to smoke, even under moderate conditions, is advised to limit prolonged or heavy outdoor activity."
For more information, call the Bucktail Fire Information Line at 970-823-4060. The line is staffed from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Updates on the fire can be found here.
The sheriff's office asks to not call 911 for non-emergencies.
Due to the Bucktail Fire, MSCO implemented Friday a Stage 1 fire ban.
