GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) - Our native insect, the Colorado bumblebee, is on a major decline. There is an effort to save this particular species and bees in general.

The Great Outdoors Colorado is launching an effort to help the pollinators through the generation wild, which is a program distributing around 100,000 free wildflower seed packets to encourage kids to help save the bees and make Colorado a more beautiful, colorful state.

Jackie Miller, executive director of the Great Outdoors Colorado, states, “Here in Colorado we have around 1,000 native bee species that play a critical role in our ecosystem, that, like our bumblebees, are facing challenges from climate change, habitat loss, pesticide use and competition from other nonnative species. So Generation Wild has worked closely with Applewood Seed Company and other bee and plant focus partners to create a seed mix that is native to Colorado and uniquely suited to support our bees and other pollinators.”

With this project, the goal is to save the bees and plants as many Colorado native wildflowers as possible. If you are interested in this program, visit generationwild.com.
