GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — A recent news release from the Grand Junction Police Department reveals there has been a rise in car thefts around the city.
Officers are looking to inform residents that break-ins can happen in any neighborhood and it is urging caution.
GJPD Police Services Technician Mary Speer has this advice for drivers.
"Staying in well-lit areas. If you're parking in a parking lot, you want to stay close to parking lot lights, streetlights, anything like that that keeps your vehicle well lit."
Thieves have been known to test door handles so always lock your doors.
Speer also says to not leave any valuables, backpacks, purses, wallets or spare keys in your vehicle.
If you become a victim of a car break-in, be sure to report the crime to the GJPD by calling the dispatch line at 970-242-6707 or make the report online through the City of Grand Junction website.
