GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) - For months, the historic Whitman Park in Grand Junction has been closed to the public. But there are now plans to reopen it with some modifications.

Officials say there were 940 community responses on the future of the park. During a city workshop on Monday night, there were discussions about renovation. Following months of planning, a strategy is now in the works to make the park more modernized.

Ken Sherbenou, parks and recreation director for the City of Grand Junction, states, “It was the culmination of the Whitman Park site master plan. So over the past six months, there's been an in-depth public engagement process with over 1,000 people engaged, from a community survey to focus groups to public meetings. A concept for revitalized, renovated Whitman Park has emerged. And that was what was presented to the city council to show what the future of that park may look like.”

The renovation of Whitman Part would consist of a new basketball court, a flex lawn, an active dog park, a play area. And possibly the most exciting part: a spot for food trucks on Fourth Street. Organizers say the project is planned for two phases. But the price is unknown at the moment as the city explores funding options.
