D51 hosting 47th Annual Colorado West Marching Band Festival

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) - A new format will be introduced to the upcoming 47th Annual Colorado West Marching Band Festival.

The event - which will begin at 10 a.m., Saturday, at Stocker Stadium - will see Western Slope bands prep for state by performing two different competitions on the same day.

According to District 51, the preliminary competition will be held by class, meaning all 1A schools will compete with each other and so forth. This portion will end at 1:30 p.m. before the announcement of the final bands.

The stadium will be cleared in preparation for the final competition.

The event will begin at 2:45 p.m. with an open class format where all the bands will compete against each other. Following this, the CMU Maverick Stampede will perform while the judges tally the scores. Awards will then be presented at 6:30 p.m.

Thirteen Colorado bands will showcase their first performance of the year, D51 said in the release. Tickets for the prelims are $15 for adults, and $10 for students, seniors over 60 and veterans. The cost for finals is $28 for adults, and $18 for students, seniors over 60 and veterans.

Children under 5-years-old get in for free for both competitions.

A combined ticket will provide access for both events, according to D51.

The school district said in the release parking will be limited at Lincoln Park the day of the event. The only spaces available from the 12th Street entrance are for handicapped parking.

"This festival brings thousands of students and spectators to our beautiful valley each year, and we truly appreciate the community’s support," D51 said in the release.
