New York man dies in Wilson Peak fall

SAN MIGUEL COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) - An experienced hiker died Wednesday morning after falling around 300 feet off Wilson Peak.

According to the San Miguel County Coroner's Office, 53-year-old Herbert Wise of Rochester, New York, was hiking alone on the Rock of Ages trailhead when he fell.

Wise was found by other climbers who contacted San Miguel County Search and Rescue. The team found Wise had succumbed to his injuries before extracting him with the help of Highland Helicopter out of Durango.

According to the coroner's office, Wise was a hiking enthusiast. He climbed all the White Mountains in New Hampshire twice, the big peaks in New York and summited 26 mountains in Colorado.

The case is under investigation.
