GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) - Night lights or candles on the water. The city of Grand Junction will be hosting its third annual Water Night Lights at Las Colonias Park on Oct.12.
Organizers say water lanterns have been used in many different cultures for thousands of years and their meaning can be a very personal one. Residents who'd like to participate can release these lanterns with a personal message and celebrate with their family, friends and fellow community members.
Emily Krause, recreation superintendent for the city, states, “I've done it with my family, with my kids. It's just a great way to kind of break down your special messages or your meanings and being able to pass that on and kind of spend that time with your family.”
The event at the Butterfly Pond is free to attend, but if you'd like to participate directly, a lantern can be purchased for $7 beforehand and $9 on the day of. City officials say if you'd like to participate you must buy a lantern from the parks and recreation office, due to the lanterns potentially being a fire hazard.
Officials say it's best to reserve your lantern ahead of time.
