GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) - The American Red Cross of Western Colorado is looking for volunteers willing to travel this fall to help out Americans on the south east coast where Hurricane Helene stormed through.
This will be a two-week period of helping out residents in the Florida Gulf Coast. Officials say there will be disaster health services participating in this relief effort. Volunteers will providing people with a safe place to stay such as giving shelter, necessities like food and water, and critical services like mental support.
Christy Castor, executive director of the Western Colorado chapter of the American Red Cross, states, “It's super important for us to basically help our neighbors, even if those neighbors are kind of across the country, people are having the worst day of their life. The big piece of the American Red Cross is we don't want people to be going through this disaster alone, and so our goal is to really provide that initial care, relief, comfort. Letting people know that they're not alone and we're there to support them.”
Officials from the Red Cross say that there are more than 900 disaster responders from the organization spanning across 10 states covering the places that are devastated from Hurricane Helene.
