PALISADE, Colo. (KREX) - An upcoming fishing derby is being held where kids have a chance to reel in the big one.

The Second Annual Grand Valley Fishing Derby - held by Scouting America's Majestic Mesas District of the Greater Colorado Council - will begin at 8:30 a.m., Saturday, at Riverbend Park in Palisade. Registration will be from 8:30 to 9 a.m., fishing will be from 9 to noon and the awards ceremony will be at 12:30 p.m.

The free event will have two age categories: ages 5-10 - who must be escorted by an adult - and then ages 11-17. Participants aged 16 and older must possess a valid Colorado fishing license.

"We're thrilled to invite the community to the Grand Valley Fishing Derby for a day of camaraderie and outdoor exploration," Preston Sheldon, derby coordinator for the Majestic Mesas District, said in a press release. "Whether you're an experienced angler or new to fishing, this is a great opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of Riverbend Park and celebrate the spirit of scouting."

Participants are asked to bring their own fishing equipment and bait as loaner supplies are limited, according to Majestic Mesas District.

Awards will be given for the best fishing outfit, largest fish and most measured inches of four fish.

The derby rules are:

  • Parents or guardians can assist with casting, but all competitors must reel in their fish.
  • All fish must be measured and recorded by an official or Scout/Cubmaster.
  • Colorado state rules apply with a daily bag limit of four trout.
