GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) - A local victim services volunteer recently received a prestigious award from a Colorado organization.
Grand Junction Police Department Victim Services Volunteer Laurel Walters received the Carol Hacker Award for Outstanding Victim Advocate in the Volunteer Sector from the Colorado Organization for Victim Assistance (COVA). The award is given to recognize folks who made a difference in the lives of crime victims through volunteering, according to the press release.
Walters has been a volunteer of the GJPD victim services program for four years.
COVA, a nonprofit, helps victims of crime recover and "restore balance to their lives," the release said. The Carol Hacker Award is given to volunteers who have shown dedication and service in victim advocacy.
According to the press release, Walters "has volunteered over 3,000 hours, providing crucial support to victims in need. Her compassionate and tireless work has made a profound difference in the lives of many, and her efforts have significantly contributed to the Grand Junction Police Department’s mission of offering emotional support and resources to those affected by crime."
