MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) - Protests were underway at Scenic Elementary on Thursday night as families were upset about District 51's recommendation to possibly close the school.

It is one of three schools that could shutter to start the 2025-26 school year. These schools were picked due to low enrollment numbers, according to the school district.

This decision is not set in stone, however, as the school board will have to vote on the matter during its meeting next Tuesday. Superintendent Brian Hill will present a report to the board members before the decide.

The school district later confirmed the report later in a letter to parents. D51 said it is the second of three schools recommended for closure - with Nisley Elementary being the other. The third school has yet to be announced.

"This news continues to be difficult, especially for those most impacted, but we want to reaffirm our commitment to keeping our families and staff informed throughout this process," D51 said. "... As we make decisions regarding school closures, we will continue to share updates with you to ensure transparency and support."

The Scenic Elementary PTO wrote on its Facebook page about the closure recommendation:

"Our Scenic Community continues to be nothing short of amazing! THANK YOU for showing up with your Scenic Fox Pride. We will continue to fight for our school.

Please show up for our PTO meeting at 4:30 on 11/18 and the Board Meeting at 5:00 on 11/19."
