GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — Being the largest metropolitan area between Denver and Salt Lake City, Grand Junction serves as a stop for truckers who travel throughout Western Colorado's highway corridors.
Colorado is known for its terrain and weather patterns, which in the winter, can be dangerous for those who are not equipped to deal with the changes.
"Colorado has had a chain law for many years," said Colorado State Patrol (CSP) Cpt. for Troop 4A Matthew Ozanic.
Ozanic alongside Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) Maintenance Superintendent John David held a press conference to discuss the updated commercial motor vehicle (CMV) chain law that went into effect Sept. 1.
"This year we've expanded that to include further western areas on some highways to include I-70 to the Utah border," said Ozanic.
The act states changes to the existing law, requiring CMV drivers to carry chains in their vehicles from Sept. 1 to May 31 in the areas of I-70 from Dotsero to Morrison and most state and federal highways west of I-25.
The goal of the press conference is to inform CMV drivers who pass through the state.
Last year, CSP issued over 1,000 citations to drivers who were stopped without the proper equipment.
Ozanic says "So far this year, we've had over 300 violations cited... I would say it's on a reduction from last year."
Accidents are more common once elements like ice, sleet and snow exist.
Whether it be an inexperienced driver or a driver that was not properly equipped, crashes can be deadly, even for those responding.
"Statistically, the average number of first responders injured annually (nationwide) while responding to traffic accidents is around 20,000," said David.
To encourage drivers to carry and install their chains when required, fines have been set for drivers who choose not to follow the law.
Drivers will be fined $50 for not carrying chains and $1,000 for drivers who get stuck and block a lane of traffic as a result of not having the chains installed.
