GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) - On Thursday, Grand Junction Regional Airport announced it was awarded a $1.3 million grant to improve its existing air traffic control tower.

The funds come from a Building Infrastructure Law grant for the Grand Junction Regional Airport Authority. The money will go toward modernizing and replacing aging infrastructure, according to a press release.

The control tower was built in 1961. It's home to air traffic controllers who oversee airspace surrounding the airport as well as movement on the runways and taxiways, the release said.

GJT has been awarded $41.8 million in federal and State of Colorado Division of Aeronautics this year alone.

It's been a busy week for GJT. On Tuesday, the airport welcomed back a direct flight to Salt Lake City through Delta Airlines.
