OURAY COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) - On Tuesday, the Colorado Department of Transportation will start work on Red Mountain Pass, stopping traffic in both directions.
CDOT said crews will start around 10 a.m. for winter maintenance operations on Highway 550 between Ouray and Silverton. The closure is expected to last most of the day with no estimated time of reopening. CDOT is asking travelers to plan ahead and allow for extra travel time.
Drivers can also use an alternate route through CO 145 through Lizard Head Pass. This route takes around an extra hour of travel time.
Additionally, CDOT noted:
- Northbound travelers will encounter a closure 4 miles north of Silverton near Ophir Pass Road around Mile Point 75.
- Southbound travelers will encounter a closure 14 miles south of Ouray at Chattanooga Mine around Mile Point 79.
- Do not attempt to bypass the closure gates.
