Grand Junction-born MLB pitcher dies

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) - Former Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz, who was born in Grand Junction, has died, the MLB organization announced Tuesday. He was 37.

The Baltimore Orioles announced his passing in a post on X:

"Our hearts are heavy tonight as we mourn the passing of former Oriole, Brian Matusz.

"A staple in our clubhouse from 2009-2016, Brian was beloved throughout Birdland, and his passion for baseball and our community was unmatched. He dedicated his time to connecting with any fan he could, was a cherished teammate, and always had a smile on his face.

"Brian’s family and loved ones are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time."

The No. 4 overall pick in the 2008 MLB Draft, Matusz started 68 games for the O's. He also pitched one game for the Chicago Cubs in 2016.

He graduated from St. Mary's High School in Phoenix before playing college ball at the University of San Diego.

No cause of death was revealed.
