DENVER (KDVR) — Monday kicks off the start of tax season, but people filing in Colorado will have to wait a few weeks before state income taxes are released.

The Internal Revenue Service said taxpayers can start filing their federal taxes on Monday, Jan. 27, leaving people with almost three months to fill out their necessary forms. While federal taxes can be filed, Colorado state taxes will have to wait.

The Colorado Department of Revenue said it tries to begin the tax filing process around the same time, or as close as possible, as the IRS. However, those filing their federal taxes on Monday won't be able to do state taxes at the same time.

When can Coloradans file state income taxes?

Historically, the department told FOX31, that it begins processing income tax returns between Martin Luther King Jr. Day and early February. For the 2023 season, state taxes were released in mid-February. Taxes for the 2022 season weren't released until February as well.

When it comes to filing state income taxes in Colorado for the 2024 season, there still isn't a pinned-down date.

The department originally told FOX31 in early January that it should have more clarity on when state income taxes could be available by the end of January. The department told FOX31 on Jan. 23 that it's still preparing for the tax season and finishing the necessary work to make the process smooth and secure.

The department said on Jan. 23 it hopes to make an announcement on the income tax processing in the next few weeks.

While the state taxes aren't out yet, there's plenty of time to fill them out. Taxpayers have until April 15 to finish filing, and for now, people can get a head start on federal income taxes before Colorado's state income taxes are released.
