MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) — A small number of mpox cases, formerly known as monkeypox, have been confirmed in Mesa County.

Mpox is a rare disease. It's not a sexually transmitted disease, but it can spread to anyone through close, personal or skin-to-skin contact with somebody who is infected. Mpox begins with flu-like symptoms and develops into a painful rash that looks like pimples or blisters on the face, inside the mouth or on other parts of the body. It's rarely fatal and most people recover in two to four weeks.

If you think you may have been exposed, Mesa County recommends getting vaccinated as soon as possible. The JYNNEOS vaccine is available at no cost from Mesa County Public Health.

Right now, the local disease surveillance team is working collaboratively with local health systems and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to identify and limit exposure to others.
