GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — A backcountry skier emerged from an avalanche unharmed near Silverthorne on Saturday.

A backcountry skier was carried around 200 feet after triggering an avalanche between Coon Mountain and Golden Bear Peak, according to a self-submitted Colorado Avalanche Information Center field report. The skier reportedly self-rescued with no injuries and was never buried during the avalanche.

According to the report, the skier changed plans due to weather conditions, despite realizing the avalanche potential. The skier tried to go slow and methodical, but didn't see or hear anything until it was too late.

Making on-the-fly decisions to enter more consequential terrain in the field is a factor in many avalanche accidents. Groups tend to have better outcomes when they stick to the objectives they selected during the planning process - seperate from the emotional pulls that good weather and fresh snow can induce.
