MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) - Eggs from Milo's Poultry Farms and Tony's Fresh Market are being recalled due to a possible salmonella contamination, according to Mesa County Public Health.
MCPH said in a press release as of Friday 65 people from nine states have been infected with a strain of salmonella. The eggs are mostly sold in Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin but illnesses with the same strain have been reported in Colorado.
The recalled products are described as:
- Chicken eggs labeled "Milo's Poultry Farms."
- Includes cage-free, organic and non-GMO chicken eggs.
- All sizes including medium, large, extra large and jumbo.
- Includes all expiration dates.
- All carton sizes of "Tony's Fresh Market" branded eggs, including all expiration dates.
MCPH said consumers should check their refrigerators for the recalled items and either throw away the products or return them to the store for a refund. The public health department also noted residents should clean and sanitize any surface or container the eggs touched.
Consumers should wash hands, utensils and surfaces with hot, soapy water before and after handling raw eggs and foods containing raw eggs.
MCPH said in the release salmonella is a bacteria that can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Symptoms can begin six hours to six days after infection while an illness can last upwards to a week.
Most people can recover without treatment, according to MCPH. Salmonella can be serious or possibly deadly for young children, elderly folks and people with weakened immune systems.
