MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) - Colorado State Patrol hopes an upcoming surge operation will deter any "turkeys" from causing a serious collision this holiday season.

On Wednesday, CSP will conduct a statewide surge "to watch for ungrateful drivers abusing their privileges on the roadway." Troopers will be stationed along highways 34, 40, 50, 160 and 287 and Interstate 70, 76 and 25.

“Don’t let your travels over the coming weeks contradict the gratitude and unity that defines the holiday season,” Col. Matthew C. Packard, chief of the Colorado State Patrol, said in a press release. “Drivers should anticipate heavy amounts of traffic leading up to Thanksgiving and again over the weekend. Pack your patience and drive with kindness.”

Troopers will be added to the daily patrol and focus on distracted and aggressive drivers - including those driving over the speed limit. They will also seek "the biggest turkeys of all:" Those who drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol, the press release said.

Last year, CSP responded to 85 crashes the day before Thanksgiving. Investigators found the collisions were due to lane violations, careless/reckless driving or speeding.

The Colorado State Patrol had a few tips for those who want to avoid a ticket. CSP suggested travelers should put down all distractions and follow the speed limit or - depending on conditions - drive at a lower speed. Such circumstances when those should speed down include:

  • Poor weather
  • Heavy traffic
  • Construction zones
  • Crash scenes
  • Sun glare
  • Wildlife
  • Anything on the right shoulder lane including police activity or someone changing a flat tire

"Troopers want to ensure Coloradoans and our visitors have a happy and safe holiday season, CSP said in the press release. "Please ensure that every chair is filled with the loved one you expect to see this year. Be a responsible driver by practicing patience behind the wheel and always leave extra space between your vehicle and other motorists, equipment or people."
